What is Ayurveda?

“The Knowledge of Life”

Origins

Ayurveda is one of the world’s oldest systems of natural healing. Originating over 5,000 years ago in the ancient Vedic culture of India, it is one of the world’s oldest systems of natural healing. Passed down through generations, it’s time honoured wisdom remains as relevant today as ever.

At its heart, Ayurveda is a consciousness-based approach to health, supporting you to really tune into how you are feeling, offering wisdom through food and nutrition, daily rhythms, and lifestyle choices that support vitality and healing.

With Ayurveda, you can:

  • Tune into your body’s needs and prevent health issues before they arise

  • Feel lighter, more at ease and have more resilience through small, natural changes

  • Find joy and balance in your day-to-day life - even in times of challenge

Ayurveda teaches that health is not just the absence of illness. It is about thriving - in a way that energy, creativity, and contentment flow naturally, so that you feel at home in the world and within yourself.

The Four Pillars of Wellbeing

The Four Essential Pillars of Wellbeing

Just as a house needs strong foundations to stand tall, our wellbeing rests on four essential pillars. Ayurveda’s holistic wisdom teaches that it is important to consider the whole and to consider the full picture in order to become fully ourselves. It makes sense that when these pillars are strong and balanced, they create a stable foundation for health, vitality, pleasure and contentment.

  • The Physical Body: Your Foundation
The structure that supports everything else. A biodynamic system which needs regular care and nourishment.

  • The Mind: Your Inner Compass
The architect of thoughts, emotions, and daily experiences. Where balance creates clarity, peace and harmony.

  • The Senses: Your Windows to the World
The gateways between your inner and outer worlds. Essential for gathering information and supporting healing.

  • The Soul: Your Inner Space
Your true essence and connection to deeper wisdom, intuition, and meaning. Your EROS (Extremely Reliable Operating System) to guide you to your most pleasant and meaningful life.

Like any well-designed structure, these pillars work together as one unified system. By understanding and nurturing each one, we create a resilient foundation for wellbeing - allowing our true wholeness to flourish.

Ayurveda places great emphasis on prevention and encourages the maintenance of health through close attention to balance in one’s life. It gently guides us to be curious through self enquiry to be part of our own healing process.

We are Nature - The Five Elements - The Doshas

Nature’s Building Blocks: The Five Elements

Ayurveda’s core intention is to guide us toward balance and harmony in how we live and interact with the world. This practice is rooted in the understanding that everything in existence - including you - is made up of five essential elements:

Space, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth

These elements shape the natural world and combine within us to create the three Doshas - Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. These are the vital energies that govern our physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and social nature.

Just as no two snowflakes are the same, Ayurveda recognises that every individual carries a unique pattern of energy. This is known as your Constitution, or Prakriti, which is made up of your unique combination of Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Your Prakriti is determined at conception and remains the same throughout your life. The nearer you maintain balance to your unique Constitution the more you ‘feel yourself.’ You are truly ‘In Your Element’ !

Vata (Space + Air)
The Energy of Movement and Flow
Vata governs all motion, from your breath to your thoughts, inspiring creativity, flexibility, and lightness

Pitta (Fire + Water)
The Energy of Transformation and Clarity
Pitta fuels digestion, focus, and understanding. It drives your inner fire, helping you to learn, transform and take action

Kapha (Earth + Water)
The Energy of Stability and Nourishment
Kapha provides strength, endurance, and emotional grounding, nurturing growth and connection

While we all contain all three Doshas, their proportions vary within each of us, creating our unique Prakriti Constitution.

We are Nature

The philosophy of Ayurveda is built on the profound truth that we are not separate from Nature, we are an integral part of it.

The same elements and qualities that shape rivers, mountains, and forests live within us. When we begin to look at ourselves and the world through the lens of Ayurveda, this connection becomes clear. This offers us a new way to understand life and restore balance.

Modern life often disturbs our natural state, leaving us feeling disconnected, tired, or unwell. Ayurveda helps you realign with nature’s rhythms, so you can:

Feel calm and grounded even during busy times

Improve your sleep, digestion, and overall sense of wellbeing

Reconnect to a deeper sense of purpose and vitality

Restoring Balance

Modern life, including diet, stress, and trauma, can take us away from our natural equilibrium. This can create Dosha imbalances. Ayurveda works on a simple principle:

‘Like increases Like’ and ‘Opposites bring Balance’

Imbalances show differently within each Dosha. When we know which Dosha is out of balance we can take steps to remedy this.

Signs of Imbalance: How to Restore Harmony

Vata Excess: Anxiety, restlessness, scattered thoughts
Balance through: Kapha’s grounding and Pitta’s focus
Think: Warm, nourishing foods, stable routines

Pitta Excess: Irritability, inflammation, criticism
Balance through: Vata’s lightness and Kapha’s cooling nature
Think: Cooling foods, relaxation, gentle movement

Kapha Excess: Lethargy, stagnation, resistance to change
Balance through: Vata’s movement and Pitta’s motivation
Think: Invigorating activities, pungent foods, dynamic practices

This elegant system of balance and counterbalance reflects nature's inherent wisdom. By understanding these principles, we can make intuitive choices that support our natural state of wellbeing.
